Black Manhattan

Rye and Averna in place of sweet vermouth. Todd Smith at Bourbon & Branch, 2005 — proved amaro could replace vermouth and create something darker, richer, more bitter.

Ingredients

  • Rye Whiskey2 ounces
  • Averna1 ounce
  • Angostura Bitters1 dash
  • Orange Bitters1 dash
  • Brandied Cherry1 each

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a brandied cherry.

Notes

Averna is load-bearing. Substitutions change the character.
