Irish whiskey, dry vermouth, absinthe, and bitters — bone-dry and faintly anise. A spare, bracing pre-Prohibition cocktail.

Ingredients

  • Irish Whiskey2 ounces
  • Dry Vermouth¾ ounce
  • Absinthe3 dashes
  • Angostura Bitters3 dashes
  • Lemon Twist1 each

Directions

Stir Irish whiskey, dry vermouth, absinthe, and Angostura with ice until cold. Strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Notes

A turn-of-the-century classic appearing in early manuals. A small rinse or dash of absinthe is all it needs.
