Brandy Crusta

Cognac, maraschino, lemon, orange curaçao, bitters — sugar-rimmed glass with a long lemon peel. Joseph Santini, New Orleans, 1850s. Ancestor of the Sidecar, Margarita, and the whole sour family.

Ingredients

  • Cognac VSOP2 ounces
  • Orange Curaçao½ ounce
  • Fresh Lemon Juice½ ounce
  • Maraschino Liqueur1 bar spoon
  • Angostura Bitters2 dashes
  • Lemon Peel (long spiral)1 each
  • Sugar (rim)1 pinch

Directions

Rim a small wine glass with sugar. Line the inside with a long spiral of lemon peel. Combine all liquid ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir until well-chilled. Strain into the prepared glass.

Notes

The crusta is the namesake — sugar-coated rim and a near-continuous spiral of lemon peel lining the glass.
