Coffee Cocktail

A port-and-cognac flip with a whole egg and sugar — rich, dark, and named 'coffee' for its color, though there's no coffee in it. A Victorian curiosity that delivers.

Ingredients

  • Cognac1 ounce
  • Ruby Port1 ounce
  • Simple Syrup½ ounce
  • Whole Egg1 each
  • Grated Nutmeg1 pinch

Directions

Dry-shake cognac, ruby port, simple syrup, and a whole egg. Add ice and shake hard again. Strain into a wine glass. Grate nutmeg over the top.

Notes

Documented by Jerry Thomas in 1887. The whole egg gives it a custardy body; the name comes purely from its coffee-like look.
