Gin (or vodka), dry vermouth, lemon twist or olive. The drink that became its own cultural shorthand.

Ingredients
- London Dry Gin2½ ounces
- Dry Vermouth½ ounce
- Lemon Peel or Olive1 each
Directions
Add base spirit and dry vermouth to a mixing glass with plenty of ice. Stir 30-40 seconds. Strain into a chilled coupe. Express a lemon peel and drop it in, or garnish with an olive.
Notes
Dryness scale: 1:1 (wet), 2:1 (classic), 5:1 (dry), 'in and out' vermouth (extra dry). Stirred, not shaken — shaking aerates and clouds.
