A Manhattan with Fernet-Branca standing in for the bitters — rye, sweet vermouth, and a bitter-minty amaro backbone. Darker and more bracing than its parent.

Ingredients

  • Rye Whiskey2 ounces
  • Sweet Vermouth1 ounce
  • Fernet-Branca½ ounce
  • Brandied Cherry1 each

Directions

Stir rye, sweet vermouth, and Fernet-Branca with ice until cold. Strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a brandied cherry.

Notes

A pre-Prohibition variation documented in period manuals. Fernet's menthol-bitter edge is the whole identity.
