Hanky Panky

Gin, sweet vermouth, Fernet-Branca. Ada Coleman at the Savoy's American Bar, 1925 — the first famous female bartender's most enduring drink.

Ingredients

  • London Dry Gin1½ ounces
  • Sweet Vermouth1½ ounces
  • Fernet-Branca2 dashes
  • Orange Peel1 each

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with an orange peel.

Notes

Coleman invented it for the actor Charles Hawtrey, who said 'By Jove! That's the real hanky-panky!' Fernet is the load-bearing ingredient.
