Improved Holland Gin Cocktail

Genever, sugar, maraschino, absinthe, Angostura. Jerry Thomas's 1862 'Improved' template with genever — the original Dutch malt-based gin.

Ingredients

  • Genever2 ounces
  • Demerara Syrup1 teaspoon
  • Maraschino Liqueur1 bar spoon
  • Angostura Bitters2 dashes
  • Absinthe0.13 ounce
  • Lemon Peel1 each

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir until well-chilled. Strain over a large ice cube. Express a lemon peel over and drop it in.

Notes

Bols Genever is the canonical brand. Genever is closer to whiskey than to London Dry — malty, less juniper-forward.
