Improved Whiskey Cocktail

Rye, sugar, absinthe, maraschino, Peychaud's, Angostura. Jerry Thomas's 'Improved' formula, 1876 — an Old Fashioned with absinthe and maraschino.

Ingredients

• Rye Whiskey2 ounces
• Demerara Syrup1 teaspoon
• Maraschino Liqueur1 bar spoon
• Peychaud's Bitters2 dashes
• Angostura Bitters1 dash
• Absinthe0.13 ounce
• Lemon Peel1 each

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir until well-chilled. Strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass. Express a lemon peel over and drop it in.

Notes

The 'improvement' over the original Whiskey Cocktail. Small amounts of absinthe and maraschino — they're seasoning, not flavor.
