Variant

Rye, sweet vermouth, bitters. Stirred, strained, served up with a cherry. The drink that proved cocktails could be sophisticated rather than rough.

Ingredients

  • Rye Whiskey2 ounces
  • Sweet Vermouth1 ounce
  • Angostura Bitters2 dashes
  • Brandied Cherry1 each

Directions

Combine whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters in a mixing glass with ice. Stir 25-30 seconds. Strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a brandied cherry.

Notes

Use a quality sweet vermouth (Carpano Antica, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino). Ratio is the personality knob: classic 2:1, drier 3:1, wet 1:1.
