Porto Flip

A port-and-brandy flip — ruby port, a little cognac, sugar, and a whole egg, shaken silky and dusted with nutmeg. The richest nightcap in the old books.

Ingredients

  • Ruby Port2 ounces
  • Cognac½ ounce
  • Simple Syrup½ ounce
  • Whole Egg1 each
  • Grated Nutmeg1 pinch

Directions

Dry-shake ruby port, cognac, simple syrup, and a whole egg. Add ice and shake hard again. Strain into a small wine glass. Grate nutmeg over the top.

Notes

A classic flip from the 19th century. Port leads, cognac supports; uses the v1.7 fortified-wine base for the port.
