Prescription Julep

A julep split between cognac and rye, mounded over crushed ice with mint. Richer and more aromatic than the bourbon original — and arguably the older form.

Ingredients

  • Cognac2 ounces
  • Rye Whiskey½ ounce
  • Simple Syrup½ ounce
  • Mint Leaves10 each
  • Mint Bouquet1 each

Directions

Lightly muddle mint with simple syrup in a julep cup. Add cognac and rye, fill with crushed ice, and stir until frosted. Top with more ice and a mint bouquet.

Notes

A 19th-century julep recipe documented by cocktail historians (and championed by David Wondrich). The cognac base predates the all-bourbon julep.
