Scofflaw

A Prohibition-era thumb in the eye — rye, dry vermouth, lemon, grenadine, and orange bitters. Named for the brand-new slang for a habitual liquor-law breaker.

Ingredients

  • Rye Whiskey1½ ounces
  • Dry Vermouth¾ ounce
  • Fresh Lemon Juice¾ ounce
  • Grenadine½ ounce
  • Orange Bitters1 dash
  • Lemon Twist1 each

Directions

Shake rye, dry vermouth, lemon juice, grenadine, and orange bitters with ice. Strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Notes

Created in 1924 at Harry's New York Bar in Paris, days after the word 'scofflaw' was coined in a Boston contest. Real pomegranate grenadine matters here.
